Il Tratturo is among the most popular and long-standing Italian ethnic music groups. Founded in 1976 by Mauro Gioielli, it boasts a long curriculum of concerts (over 1500), records, tours in Europe and in America, appearances on Rai and Mediaset television and radio programmes. The members of the group have carried out «ethnophonic» and «organological» research, recovering a rich repertoire of songs and rediscovering some ancient musical instruments from Italian folklore, in particular the «zampogna» and the «ciaramella». These, in Il Tratturo’s home region of Molise, are the most representative instruments of the folk tradition.
